Los Angeles mansion owned by Max and Lubov Azria
The Tunisian-born fashion designer Max Azria his wife Lubov live in Los Angeles with their six children and Lubov’s parents in a 1930s mansion designed in the style of an 18th-century French chateau, which was built for the American radio comedian Charles Correll. Azria bought it seven years ago from the writer and producer Sidney Sheldon. Set in Holmby Hills, an affluent neighbourhood a few minutes’ drive from Sunset Boulevard, it features dramatic flourishes similar to those that can be found in Azria’s clothes. The tone is set at the entrance: 100,000 crystals have been hand-strung and hung around fibre optics to create the cascading effect of a waterfall in the hallway.
The 60-room estate the couple calls home echoes their dynamic design aesthetic. Steeped in off-whites and other neutrals, the décor is enlivened by bold splashes of color throughout. The living room—which was codesigned by Lubov—features a lifesize orange-lacquer horse (Max’s favorite color) with a vintage Hermès saddle standing in one corner, as well as orange-lacquered chairs with limegreen seat cushions. In the home’s ballroom, a chrome garland of 400 lasercut flowers covers the entire ceiling, and armchairs covered with Pucci fabric face a grand fireplace. There are Moroccan-themed gardens and Warholesque silver rooms.
The theatrical porter’s chairs in the entrance hallway put a contemporary film-star spin on life, while the transparent swinging Bubble Chair in the ballroom is an Eero Aarnio classic from the 1960s. Touches of monochrome Fornasetti sit next to Philippe Starck classics. Missoni flourishes and sets of Pucci swirls are offset by geometric blocks of black and white in textiles and surfaces. The dining room is illuminated by a Tord Boontje for Swarovski Crystal Palace chandelier.
